If we look at how humanity behaved over the past 50 years, we haven’t really taken into account the environmental limits and the scarcity of the resources that we have been using, and we’ve always taken them for granted, like they were infinite. Ever since the 1970s, we have been using every year more natural resources than our planet can regenerate.
This exploitation is not sustainable in the long-term: we need to rethink our economic model towards “sustainable development”, which means ensuring a level of economic growth that allows meeting the needs of a growing number of people but doing it within the environmental limits of planetary stability.
Silvia Merler (Head of ESG & Policy Research, Algebris Investments) and Simone Ragazzi (Sustainable World Strategy Portfolio Manager, Algebris Investments) discuss how humanity can become sustainable and how finance can help.
